Before becoming an actress, she started her modeling career as a young model. She was nominated for the Theatre World Award for "one of the most promising stars 1956-57" for her role in The Potting Shed. Lynley started her film career with the Disney film The Light in the Forest which was then followed by Holiday for Lovers (1959) and Blue Denim (1959). She was nominated in the year 1959 for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer - Female. She was nominated for the Golden Globe Award again for Most Promising Youngcomer - Female the following year for Blue Denim.
