
DeWitt started her stage show at age 13. DeWitt earned her degree from Ball State University with a Bachelor's of Arts. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. She was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While attending UCLA she worked as a secretary up to her debut on television in the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to rumors that she was guided by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has declared that the two actors never had a conversation. DeWitt is most famous for her part in Three's Company's 1977-1984 run as Janet Wood. This was one of the roles she was offered after being selected for the pilot episode that followed. She also played Janet in an episode from 1979 on the spinoff series The Ropers. Following the show's conclusion, Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984 in which she then ceased acting for a number of years. She made her return on stage in the month of June in 1991 when she appeared in a Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. After that she appeared on the TV comedy Spring Fling! A character who was based on her, voiced by an actress, appeared in a 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She appeared in an episode Cybill and made a brief appearance on Living Single's penultimate episode.
